Judging Criteria
The judges at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show assess the entries each year over four days. To enable a fair and meaningful assessment to be made, the wines are broken into separate classes, for example Aromatic Style, Blends, Varietal Classes (which must contain at least 85% of the specified grape variety), Brandy – and so on.
The Wine Show judges review each class and on receipt of all results sheets applicable to any one class, the Chairman of Judges has the points totalled, checked and then determines the awards.
Wine Show Judges do not have access to the exhibits, apart from the unidentified glasses of wine placed in front of them for judging.
Exhibits are judged on points as follows:
Medals are awarded as follows:

**STOP PRESS!!** On 14/11/2014 our Riesling was awarded The Pellenc Trophy Riesling of the Year 2014 by Winestate Magazine! Fantastic news!!
Summer drinking around the Christmas period is perfect for our “The Great White” Sauvignon Blanc with 2014 once again hitting all the right tropical notes.
The Boston Bay Wines “The Great White” label has built a strong following since its inception in 2009 – and generates a fantastic partnership with our amazing Eyre Peninsula seafood.
In September, Winestate Magazine awarded the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc stars; and in October the Adelaide Wine Show awarded “The Great White” a Bronze Medal.
Varietally correct with steely minerals and tropical elegance, this will be a very long, lingering delight for the Sauvignon Blanc enthusiast.
The awards keep coming with Winestate Magazine giving the 2014 Riesling a 4 1/2 star rating.
A fine style of Riesling with a powerful perfumed palate, showing spicy citrus flavours with floral undertones and plenty of steely acid layered with Boston Bay’s trademark mineral tones.
Boston Bay Wines celebrates its 30th birthday this year and with Summer around the corner, it is a perfect time to make merry with our 2014 Riesling and “The Great White” Sauvignon Blanc.
The full range of Boston Bay Wines are available to purchase locally through selected outlets over the Eyre Peninsula; the cellar door on Lincoln Highway, Port Lincoln; and are also available online.
This year Boston Bay Wines celebrates its 30th birthday on our “One in a Million” 17 acre boutique vineyard.
Over this vintage, we picked 35 tonne of grapes, due to an excellent year, a wet winter and coolish weather over the ripening period.
The grapes were sent to our trusted winemakers David O’Leary and Nick Walker who were pleased with the baumè and colour.
Our grapes are hand-picked each year by a loyal picking group, including Riding for the Disabled, Rotary, Blue Water Raiders, Charlton Cricket Club, as well as a large number of family and friends.
The pickers use the season as a fundraiser for their respective groups, and we are delighted to be able to contribute to local organisations.
The Sauvignon Blanc fruit was picked on February 9. This was the first year our new plantings (planted 2010) of 10 rows were harvested, with the main block now at full production.
The last few rows of the main block of the Sauvignon Blanc planting was very thick and yielded 3-4 buckets per vine, making it impossible to pick from one angle!
Tony and Turtle (Aaron) followed the grapes from this pick to Clare, watching the crushing at around 7.30am the next morning; with Geoff and Kiter running O’Leary Walker’s “big juicer”.
On the award side of wines – Winestate Magazine has awarded our 2014 Riesling 4 1/2 stars and the prestigious The Pellenc Trophy for Riesling of the Year 2014.
Our 2014 Sauvignon Blanc has been awarded 3 stars by the magazine.
